Can Dental Implants Decay?

Can Dental Implants Decay?

No, dental implants cannot decay. They’re made of titanium (for the implant) and porcelain (for the crown) -- neither of which are affected by cavities. However, you should still practice good oral hygiene if you’re a dental implant patient because gum disease can cause them to fail. In fact, gum disease is one of the leading causes of implant failure.

Gum disease or periodontitis starts with bacterial growth in your mouth. When this occurs, gum and bone will begin to pull away from your implants and form spaces -- which can collect food debris and lead to infection. Over time, the implants will become loose and may even fall out due to insufficient gum and jaw support.

It’s important to keep in mind that dental implants collect plaque and bacteria just like natural teeth. So, to help prevent implant failure, brush and floss like normally and visit your dentist at least three to six times a year. Practicing good oral hygiene will ensure your dental implants last you a lifetime.
