The wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are the last teeth to descend from the jaw bone. Typically, when wisdom teeth come in, they descend sideways or do not completely emerge. When wisdom teeth appear and do not appropriately grow in alongside the neighboring teeth, dental issues arise and make wisdom tooth removal necessary. Wisdom teeth extraction tends to occur during the late teens and early twenties as this is when they begin to appear. Removing wisdom teeth at the first sign of their inappropriate descent can avoid many complications associated with them. At Lewis Family & Implant Dentistry, we can determine through the use of x-rays whether your wisdom teeth will come in properly. If we determine your wisdom teeth are coming in sideways or aren’t emerging at all, we’ll recommend wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth extraction should not be delayed, as doing so can increase the risks associated with the procedure.
What Do Wisdom Teeth Emerging Feel Like?
The most common symptoms associated with the emergence of wisdom teeth include:
- Bacteria growth that often leads to infection
- Inflammation
- Swelling
- Headaches
- Toothaches
- Shifting of neighboring teeth
- Appearance of cysts around compacted teeth
- Trouble sleeping
- Difficulties in eating
Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure
Have no fear when it comes time for the wisdom teeth extraction to take place. You are in professional and caring hands when you choose Lewis Family & Implant Dentistry, with the primary goal being your comfort and excellent dental health. If you are dealing with an existing infection from the bacteria present from your wisdom teeth, it will need to be fully cured before the extraction can take place.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction Recovery
The recovery time for the procedure is only a few days. During this time, you will need to keep gauze in your mouth, putting pressure over the area in which the teeth were removed. You will be prescribed painkillers to help alleviate any pain you may have. Stay home with your head propped up after the initial surgery. Stick to soft foods like pudding and mashed potatoes. Don’t smoke for the first few days after the procedure and refrain from any physical activity. Carefully rinse your mouth out with warm salt water morning, noon, and night will aid in the healing process.
